Architect & Founder, La Fontaine Mansion
Polanco
Polanco was established in the 1930s and 1940s on land that once formed part of the historic Hacienda de los Morales, owned by the Cuevas Lascuráin family. Its development was spearheaded by José G. de la Lama and Raúl Basurto, who envisioned an exclusive ‘garden city’ characterised by spacious residences and generous green spaces. The name Polanco derives from an old river that once crossed the area, itself named in honour of Juan Alfonso de Polanco, a 16th-century Spanish Jesuit.
Over the following decades, Polanco established itself as one of Mexico City’s most prestigious neighbourhoods. Its growth was shaped by the arrival of immigrant communities — particularly Jewish, Lebanese and Spanish — whose presence contributed significantly to the area’s economic, social and cultural development.
The neighbourhood also became home to prominent figures in Mexican cultural and business life, including María Félix, Emilio Azcárraga Vidaurreta, David Alfaro Siqueiros and Agustín Lara, reinforcing Polanco’s reputation as a centre for the country’s political, business and cultural elite.
From the 1980s and 1990s onwards, many of its original mansions gave way to boutiques, restaurants and corporate buildings, transforming Polanco from an exclusive residential neighbourhood into one of Mexico’s leading destinations for business, gastronomy and luxury retail.

La Fontaine Mansión
La Fontaine Mansion was designed by architect Eduardo Fuhrken Meneses between 1940 and 1941 for Doña Diana Flores de Urbina, a descendant of Luis Bolland Kuhmackl, who laid out the Paseo del Emperador — today known as Paseo de la Reforma.
The mansion is a remarkable example of Mexican Neo-Baroque architecture. Set across two storeys, with a basement and distinctive corner tower, the residence reflects the architectural tradition of Eduardo Fuhrken, who also designed the home of the Henaine family. La Fontaine Mansion is one of just twelve grand residences that have survived around what was once known as the “Parque de los Espejos”, now Parque Lincoln.
The main façade is set back to accommodate an expansive south-facing terrace overlooking the park. Its openings are richly framed in hand-carved cantera stone in the Baroque tradition, incorporating columns of different classical orders, mixtilinear arches, ornamental mouldings and finely crafted wrought iron.
The original interiors were conceived with the same attention to detail, featuring carved cantera stone, decorative plasterwork and wrought iron. This architectural language, which became increasingly fashionable among Mexico’s upper classes from the 1920s onwards, found particularly lavish expression in Chapultepec, Lomas, Polanco and Colonia del Valle.
